I will be doing two London Street Photography Workshops in 2020.

  • An Introduction to Street Photography Workshop 2nd-3rd May 2020
  • ICA London 2 days
  • This workshop is designed to build solid foundations for your future Street Photography practice, preparing you technically, emotionally, physically and intellectually for making Candid Public Photographs. The workshop includes classroom time, accompanied street shooting with Nick and individual street shooting.

  • Your motivation for making Street Photographs
  • How to elevate your photographs to pictures
  • How Street Photographs are constructed
  • Strategies and approaches to Street Photography
  • Overcoming your fear of photographing strangers

  • Advanced Street Photography Workshop 5-6th Sept 2020
  • ICA London 2 Days
  • This workshop is aimed at established Street Photographers who are fairly confident with their technical approach but need guidance in progressing their Street Photography to something which is uniquely and identifiably theirs. The workshop eschews the traditional focus on the technical to emphasise Street Photography as an intellectual process. You will be encouraged to think as much as shoot.
  • Analysing and Understanding your current body of work and it's context within contemporary Street Photography
  • Revisiting your reasons and motivations for choosing Street Photography
  • Using Editing as a tool to distil new ways forward in your Street Shooting
  • Exploring your individual story to bring uniqueness to your picture making
  • The role of experimentation and failure in developing original work
  • Exploring the freshest new work being made on the street as inspiration
  • Shooting a task to develop a novel way of seeing

Nick Turpin

Nick Turpin

Workshop Leader
Nick Turpin is an internationally renowned Street Photographer who started his career with The Independent Newspaper in London at the age of 20, he is now one of just a handful of photographers worldwide who shoot commissioned Street Photography for Advertising, Design and Editorial clients. In 2000 Nick founded the influential in-public Street Photographers group that played a significant role in the contemporary resurgence of interest in the approach. Nick's series of commuters 'On The Night Bus' was published to much acclaim in 2017. Nick is known as an observer and commentator on the Street Photography scene and is invited to talk about the genre as much as he is his own work. Nick has taught and lectured on Street Photography for Apple, The Royal Photographic Society, The Sony World Photography Organisation, Yale School of Art, The Discovery Channel, Tate Modern and at Photography Festivals around the world including Miami, LA, Brussels, Bilbao, Milan and STREET LONDON.   Photo: Josu Zaldibar

Workshop Venue: The Institute of Contemporary Arts

The iconic ICA was founded in 1947 and aims in its own words to “contextualise contemporary culture within the socio-political conditions of the times” which to me could not be a better description of the purpose of Street Photography. We will be based in the ICA’s creative studio space. The ICA is perfectly located for us to access a nice variety of shooting locations, opposite St James Park, it is 2 minutes walk from Trafalgar Square and Buckingham Palace and just 5 minutes walk to Piccadilly Circus, Regent St and Soho. If you enjoy shooting great architectural locations, thronging tourist destinations or busy shopping streets, they will be on our doorstep for the weekend.
